LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE

What is it?

Long- term care Insurance (LTCI) helps provide for the cost of long-term care beyond a predetermined period and covers care generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. Age is not a determining factor in needing long-term care and many times those who require it are generally not sick, but rather, are unable to perform the basic activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, eating, continence and walking.

What role does long- term care insurance play with home care?

Long-term care insurance generally covers home care, assisted living, adult daycare, respite care, hospice care, nursing home and Alzheimer’s facilities. If home care coverage is purchased it will cover caregivers, companions, housekeepers, therapists and private duty nurses.

When do I purchase long-term care insurance?

It is important to remember that age is not a determining factor in needing long-term care. About 60 percent of individuals over the age of 65 will require some type of long-term care services during their lifetime, but about 40% of those individuals receiving long-term care today are between the ages of 18-64. Early onset of Alzheimers and Parkinsons (before age 65) are rare but it does exist and once a change of health occurs, long-term care insurance may not be available.
